I have had the supreme honor of riding my bike from Staten Island New York to Niagara Falls for the past two years to raise money for cancer research. I will ride again in July. The ride is a personal challenge and I train throughout the year to prepare for it. It’s about 560 miles long and takes place over the course of 7 days. There are some days that are more challenging than others, one with impressive elevation gains and one day that’s over 100 miles. All to wake up and ride again in the morning. The camaraderie I have found on these rides and the community of people all riding for the same cause is really inspiring. I am more than peripherally aware that the daily challenges I face during that week are nothing compared to the road faced by individuals facing a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and hopefully recovery. I have always carried a list of the names of people I am riding for. People have donated in honor of or in memory of a loved one. My own family has had many cancer survivors, and I ride with all these names in my saddle bag. This year I am dedicating my ride to my friend Harriet. Harriet has always been a fighter; a strong individual both physically and emotionally. She is fighting the biggest fight of her life right now but the odds are against her. It doesn’t stop me from wanting to keep her with me as I ride and to raise funds so that other individuals will not face a terminal diagnosis. Cancer research evolves every day and more treatments are available. With your support, we can provide better odds and opportunities for someone to face cancer with more hope and happier outcomes. Any and all donations are appreciated as I work toward my goal.
