Schools Against Cancer 2023-24

Abate Elementary School

As many of you know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Unfortunately, this awful disease will affect 1 in 8 women throughout their lifetime. Unfortunately, Mrs. Carlo & Mrs. Hardy both were 1 of 8 women to be diagnosed with this awful disease.

At 28 years old, Mrs. Hardy underwent a double mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation and breast reconstruction.

She is now proud to say she is a 8 year survivor!

Mrs. Carlo can now “officially” say she is a survivor as well after going through a similar journey as Mrs. Hardy just last year.  Like Mrs. Hardy, I unfortunately was part of the 1 in 8 club, but I was so lucky to have my friend, Mrs. Hardy to help me along my entire journey.  During my journey, she was my personal teacher along with all the wonderful doctors at Roswell Park as well as Mr. Carlo and my family and friends.

Our goal is to always advocate for women's health after personally being affected by Breast Cancer. Roswell Park Cancer Institute is a big part of why we had such a successful cancer journey. We always like to do our part to raise funds and awareness and show our support since they helped us and so many other women and men in our community.

Many of us, unfortunately, know someone who has also been affected by cancer: A friend, a relative, a colleague. We think it would be a great gesture of solidarity to show how Abate cares and help raise funds for Roswell Park so one day we don’t know as many people going through any type of cancer.

On Thursday, October 19th, we will have a PINK day at Abate. Staff and students will be encouraged to wear Pink and donate any amount in their means to Roswell.
