Working at Roswell Park, I've gained a new perspective on the fight against cancer. I knew it was hard, I knew it could be deadly. But I had never before had to ask a mom about her baby boy's lifesaving surgery, watching the tears pour down her face. I'd never had a chance to ask a dad what it meant to him to get more time with his kids and hear him choked up but still full of joy. For the first time, I had a conversation with a woman my age whose reality was so far from my own, but whose faith and peace we're beyond what I could imagine.
Roswell Park is a place where all of these folks and so many more come to find hope. Not everyone has good outcomes, not everyone gets more time. But that's why I'm riding. That's why I'm fundraising. To help bring new treatment options to the table for rare, aggressive cancers. To drive clinical trials forward so more patients can experience the hope they offer. To fuel research that I see happening every single day that will eventually change everything we know about cancer until it's no longer anything to fear.
So I'm going to go ride a stationary bike outside at 9:30 p.m. on a Friday in the Buffalo winter like a maniac to get people's attention and make a difference.
