One out of three Americans will develop cancer sometime in their lifetime.
That's why I'm taking on a challenge to push myself to make a difference for cancer research. I'm participating in a cycling challenge outside in chilly Buffalo. Winter in Buffalo is tough, but you know who is tougher?
I ride in memory of my mom, Karen, and honor of my best friend, Alicen. I'm grateful to have been surrounded by strong women and especially 2 of the strongest and most compassionate helpers. Community is what comes to mind when you bring up my mom or Alicen. My mom lived with cancer for 4 years, all the while cheering on other survivors, traveling, caring for family and keeping a smile on her face. When my mom passed away in 2011, the school she had worked at for 40 plus years shut down for the day because she was such a huge part of the community.
Alicen is a woven part of our community too. Alicen has kept the forward movement through her whole journey with open arms bringing everyone around her along. Not only chasing her daughter, but caring for her parents, cherishing friends and supporting her students and their families too. Cancer didn't stop these women's will to care for others all the while living with and getting treatment for cancer.
