The Empire State Ride is a transformative seven-day cycling adventure not for the faint at heart. You ride from NYC to Niagara Falls, approximately 550 miles. This event combines the love of cycling with a powerful mission-to raise funds for cancer research and support services. The journey promotes physical fitness, but also serves as a symbol of hope, unity, and resilience in the face of cancer. Cyclists and supporters alike come together to create a community dedicated to making a difference in the fight against cancer.
On April 10th, 2023 my wife, Stacey found a lump in her breast. Soon afterwards she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately, the cancer spread to her lymph nodes, which complicated matters. She has had to endure surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and now has to be on an assortment of medications for at least the next 2-10 years.
She has navigated the challenges of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, and now medication with unwavering courage. She took each treatment one step at a time, maintaining an astonishing poise, embracing each treatment with a tenacity that only grows stronger. She has been remarkable throughout this whole process. Many times she is more worried about how this is affecting others, not herself.
It is also hard to express in words how much I love her. I joke that our marriage is like a “fine wine,” only getting better with age. I wish I could just make it all go away. Unfortunately, this is not a possibility, it is out of my control. I want to be able to do something with her, to support her, to show her how much I care for her.
Obviously, cancer attacks you physically. It also attacks you mentally. One way that Stacey wants to combat this is by training for the Empire State Ride. She wants to be able to say that she rode across the state in a week as a cancer survivor. She wants to be able to raise funds for cancer research. She knows that she has personally benefited from the improvement of cancer treatment over time. She wants others in the future to benefit from advancement of cancer research too.
I’m riding with her to support her through this journey. I’m riding for my father-in-law who has had to undergo significant treatment for oral cancer. I’m also riding for my brother Brian, the best man at my wedding. I miss him very much. May Brian’s memory live on and may our memories flourish together. Let’s ride!
