Every day, people all over the world
are diagnosed with cancer.
In the past few years, my aunt and brother joined that list. Fortunately, my aunt is in treatment--at Roswell! My brother Mark had an operation last year, and just recently was declared cancer free for a full year. One of my dear friend was not so fortunate, and after a years-long battle died in 2020.
My dad, Bob Drajem, is riding in his 18th consecutive Ride this year. He and my mom can count too many close friends and family members who received a cancer diagnosis over the years. Far too many lost their lives.
This year, I am joining my dad and many other family members as part of the Fighting Irish Fighting Cancer team that has been led by my dad for many years. His dedication to the Ride is an inspiration. Thanks to his leadership, his team has raised over $300,000, no small accomplishment for a team that is made up of a couple dozen riders each year.
My personal fundraising goal this year is to once again raise enough funds to join the Silver Extra Mile Club. If I meet that goal by June 17, I can participate in the Peloton on Friday, June 24, a great way to honor current cancer patients and show dedication to their fight.
One of the most impactful moments from last year's Ride Weekend was joining my dad for the Peloton. Following a moving tribute to the patients at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, this12-mile bicycle procession travels in a two-by-two formation from Roswell Park to the University at Buffalo’s North Campus. The Peloton carries the spirit of the community as it kicks off the Celebration of Hope and the Ride for Roswell.
