Working at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, I have often heard and cited the statistics that one in two men and one in three women in America will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
My father had at least one bout of cancer, in addition to having a stroke and ailing with Alzheimer’s late in his life. My in-laws had pancreatic and lung cancer, both detected at very late stages. Friends and family have also suffered from their various cancer types.
In May, I was diagnosed with breast cancer at a very early stage. I am grateful, beyond grateful, to work at Roswell Park and know the teams who provide amazing care to the patients. I know the scientists, working at the lab bench trying to find the next biomarker or drug that will help patients; scientists who work with our community members to raise awareness about screening; the significant amount of administrative and support staff team members who work behind the scenes to make sure things run smoothly in our labs and clinics; and most recently, the nursing and supportive care teams who took care of me, just this past Friday, as I had my second surgery with Dr. Jessica Young and her incredible team. The team effort is evident each day with the passion to do our jobs and hope someday to take one small step towards a cure.
Screening, especially in this crazy time of Covid-19, should not be skipped. Please make sure you and your loved ones heed medical advice for cancer screening.
As many of you know, I’m an incredibly private person and hesitated to put this on social media and share publicly. We learn from our past, that if we can touch one person’s life with our story and encourage them to make a difference (hint: get screened for cancer) and help make one step in the right direction, then we can change the world.
