This is more than a bike ride- it's personal. I am riding for all the others who cannot ride. I ride in persuit of a cure for a disease that has effected my family in many ways and with numerous people I love. Most of all, I ride in support of Roswell Park Cancer Institute. This is my sister's story.
It started in 1974 and cancer was a little known disease. That February my sister Melissa was 12 years old and diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterus. Rhabdomyosarcoma is a rare and usually fatal cancer. Living in a small town the only hope Melissa and my family had for her survival was for her to be accepted into Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY. Roswell was three plus hours away and in another state, but they accepted my sister and her journey began. Melissa had a hysterectomy on Feburary 14, 1974 and spent years on chemotherapy. Thanks to Roswell, she survived that cancer and lived a full and active life until she was diagnosised with breast cancer in August 2007. Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the doctors, the treatments, and the compassion shown to Melissa and my family made it possible to have my sister another 33 years. I am grateful to Roswell Park Cancer Institute for giving Melissa those 33 years. In January 2011, Melissa lost her last battle with cancer. So I ride to support her memory and all those who have lost that fight. Please support my cause and make a donation today. No donation is too small and every dollar adds up to something greater than any one of us could accomplish alone.
