The excitement is starting to pick up for the 2019 24th annual Ride for Roswell (R4) on June 21-22. This is truly a community-wide event that attracts people from all walks of life, and all with the same goal - to beat cancer. For some like me it is personal. My pharyngeal cancer treatment at RPCCC is now over two years in the rear view mirror. I am riding to thank Roswell, but I am also riding for those who are fighting the good fight as you read this. For others it's about a bigger vision - to rid the world of this scourge that takes so many of us way too early. Over the past two years - thanks to so many of you - I have raised about $30,000 to suppport the patients and research at RPCCC.
As in the past, I have committed to the Extra Mile Club Peloton that will kick off the Ride for Roswell by riding from RPCCC to the University at Buffalo North Campus (13 miles). The next day we will ride a 45 mile country route, followed by the 12 mile ride home. My 2019 goal is to increase what I raised last year by $2000.00. I have family members who are dealing with serious cancer and others who have benefitted from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in the past year. So yes, it is still very personal to me!
I am cured because of the revolution in cancer research in the past decade. Researchers and physicians are beginning to understand the causes of cancer and are making inroads into new methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment. All of us can be at risk for cancer. My cancer was caused by a virus; who knew? Like most of you I have dear friends who have been successfully treated, and I have lost family and friends to this disease. All of them will be in my thoughts as I ride.
Please help support me in this important project by contributing generously. Your tax-deductible contribution is greatly appreciated. Because I have to turn the funds in before I ride in these events, please make the payments now. Don’t wait for me to “collect” on your pledges after the rides.
Whatever you can give will help – it all adds up!! Thank you for your support and I will keep you posted on my progress.
